Castlewood

Castlewood is a neighborhood unlike any other in Pleasanton. With its hillside location, offering spectacular views of the valley below, residents in this prized community enjoy a rural, woodland setting just minutes from downtown Pleasanton.

Today’s homeowners were not the first to be captivated by this area. Castlewood originally served as the summer residence of Phoebe Apperson Hearst, who first purchased the property in the late 1800s. Hearst, who was living in San Francisco at the time, was reportedly drawn to this spectacular hillside property in Pleasanton for its beautiful setting, majestic views and moderate climate. Those are many of the same reasons that continue to attract residents to Castlewood.

When the Hearst hacienda, designed by renowned architect Julia Hunt Morgan, was sold in 1924, a group of businessmen transformed it into the Castlewood Country Club. (The original Hearst home burned down in 1969, but the current building was closely modeled after it.) Two golf courses were built on the property – one on the hillside and one in the valley — and over the years, the rest of the acreage was sold, mostly to wealthy San Francisco residents looking to build second homes for summer residences.

As a result, Castlewood is an eclectic collection of luxury homes, many built in the late’ 60s and ‘70s, tucked in and around the golf course on winding tree-lined streets. They range in size from 2,000 square feet to well over 5,000 square feet and are situated on lots range from ¼ acre to more than 1 acre. The community actually falls outside the city boundaries, so Castlewood residents have separate water services than the city of Pleasanton.

Castlewood is nestled in the hills on the west side of Pleasanton, with access off of Foothill Road. Highly sought after by many for its location, this community is close to downtown Pleasanton and enjoys easy access to the 580 and 680 freeways, the Stoneridge Mall, Pleasanton Ridge Regional Park and elementary, middle and high schools as well as shopping and dining.  This community is prized by golfers, who welcome the opportunity to join the Castlewood Country Club.
